Succesful workshop about Bremia

IBEB-global organized a workshop at Naktuinbouw on July 1 about assessing difficult symptoms in Bremia tests. Employees from Dutch, French and Italian seed companies, colleagues from GEVES and a researcher from UC Davis, a total of 20 people, attended the workshop.

The workshop was organized by IBEB-global. IBEB-global is an umbrella group of IBEB-EU and IBEB-US. Within IBEB (International Bremia Evaluation Board) lettuce breeders and phytopathologists from Dutch, French and American seed companies, UC Davis, GEVES and Naktuinbouw work together to monitor Bremia infection in lettuce in Europe and the USA. If a certain isolate of Bremia occurs frequently, denomination as a new race may follow. We can also propose to include such a new race in the UPOV guideline and in the CPVO protocol of lettuce.

Many tests were prepared by Rijk Zwaan and all the boxes were assessed in small groups. This was very useful, good discussion ensued. At the end there was more agreement and that helps us all in the future. Harmonization in the assessment ensures that companies properly inform the registration authorities when they apply for registration of a new variety. And it ensures that registration authorities come to the same conclusion about the distinctness of new varieties.
